Bulgaria Black Sea capital to swallow adjacent municipalities

Date: 28.11.2008

The merging of Varna with the adjacent municipalities is inevitable, according to architect Villy Zhechev, Deputy Mayor for Construction at the municipality of the Bulgarian Black Sea capital.

Zhechev spoke on Wednesday in a special interview for the Darik radio.

Varna is located on an area, which has become too small for its 600,000 to 700,000 estimated residents, the Deputy Mayor explained, adding that the mayors of smaller towns needed to understand that they were not governing fief properties and begin thinking about common urbanization plans.

The final urbanization plan of Varna was going to be ready by the middle of 2009 and would then become subject of public discussions, the Deputy Mayor said.

Zhechev further stated that the investment interest towards the Bulgarian Black Sea capital showed a 20% decline compared to 27% nationwide.

The arcithect's forecast is for a 50% reduction by the middle of 2009.

The Deputy Mayor also spoke about the damages that a potential earthquake would inflict on the city. He pointed out that buildings constructed between 1990 and 1997 were at the greatest danger, because the above period was characterized by the lack of control over construction activities and by the use of low quality building materials.
