Bulgarian airlines passenger numbers dip in 2007

Date: 26.02.2008

Passengers on the international routes of the Bulgarian air carriers rose 10.8% to 5.9 million in 2007, shows data of the Bulgarian Airlines Association (BAA).

However, total passenger numbers were down over 2006.

Foreign air carriers posted a 18.4% gain in passengers, boosting their market share by around 4% in 2007.

International passenger traffic at the airports in Sofia, Varna and Burgas rose 33% to 2.9 million in 2007.

The Sofia airport reported a 4% decrease in passenger numbers. The Varna airport recorded a decline in charter passengers that flew BH Air, Bulgarian Air Charter, Hemus Air, Air Via or Bulgarian Air. BAA executive director Svetoslav Stanulov explained the Varna downside with the fact that most incoming Romanian tourists arrived by car.

The air cargo forwarding companies incurred a combined loss of USD 30 after the EU banned the use of their Russian-made An-12, An-24 and An-26 cargo planes within the union.

The carriers have registered the banned planes abroad to provide shipping services to third countries.
