EUR 3,5 B available for infrastructure

Date: 28.02.2008

Bulgaria's PM Sergey Stanishev announced Monday that about EUR 3,5 B for the planned infrastructure projects were already available.

The PM participated Monday at a meeting of the Council for Coordination, Control, and Execution of the Infrastructure Projects of National Significance.

The Finance Minister Oresharski, the Energy and Economy Minister Dimitrov, the Transport Minister Murafchiev, the Regional Development Minister Gagauzov, and the Environment Minister Chakurov also took part in the council and in the press conference after that.

In PM Stanishev's words, there are 188 infrastructure projects being executed at the moment worth a total of EUR 11 B. The EUR 3,5 B already available are about 30% of the total necessary sum.

"I am sure that in 2008 there will be significant additional funding from the EU programs", Stanishev said.

Forty-eight infrastructure projects, or 25% of the planned program, have already been completed.

"The main point of today's meeting was to speed up the execution of all projects", the PM announced, adding that the ministers had been given more specific instructions for the accelerated fulfillment of the ISPA program so that a maximum part of the approved funding could be absorbed.

Stanishev also said that 83% of all EU funds for 2007 had been absorbed efficiently, which was a good percentage. In his words, Bulgaria might manage to absorb all funds, thus loosing no money.
