EUR 500 million bonus for buffalo farms

Date: 27.03.2008

At least ten new farms for oxen will be established in Bulgaria with the help of Buffalo-breeding federation of Germany under the Buffelhof Bulgaria project, announced chairman of the federation Ekhhart Hilderbrand. Investments will be for approximately EUR 500 million.

70% will be by EU funding and the projects for application will be prepared after a research of the Bulgarian market. The aim is to resurrect this branch of cattle breeding that used to be so popular not a century ago in the country. The new farms will be situated in North Bulgaria. The farms will be energy independent, with alternative and renewable energy sources.

The buffalo is a very ecologically clean anima, very durable from common cattle. It may feed only on straw, and its meat contains less fat and cholesterol. Currently in Bulgaria there are only 8000 animals, 4800 of which are female mothers.
