Bulgaria's railways to impose luggage limit, check-in

Date: 27.03.2008

Bulgaria's state-owned railways BDZ announced they are to introduce a luggage limit of 30 kilograms, as well as luggage check-in in order to boost security in trains across the country.

According to the new regulations, passengers would pay additional taxes, which have not been defined yet, for every kilo above the limit.

BDZ says that a luggage check-in system would also be introduced and passengers travelling long distance would have to leave their luggage to be transported in a special train car.

Transportation of flammable and explosive materials is absolutely prohibited and officials would strictly ensure the rule is kept, the company added.

The discussion of the new measures comes nearly a month after nine people were charred to death and nine more were injured after two cars of the night train going from Sofia to the northeastern town of Kardam burst into flames.
