Bulgaria's population thins down by 39,000 in 2007

Date: 31.03.2008

Bulgaria's population has decreased by 39,000 people during the last year in comparison to 2006, data of the National Statistical Institute shows.

That was the smallest since 1990 as the birth rate and life expectancy marked slight increase.

The average age of the population in the country was 41 and the average life expectancy went over 72 years while in the most European countries that figure was set at 80 in the period 2005-2007.

A total of 75,915 Bulgarian babies came into the world in the last year. That index places Bulgaria at one and the same level with a number of other European states like Spain, Greece, Switzerland and Poland.

The migration and children mortality rates have also decreased, the report data reveals.
