Shortage of IT professionals in Bulgaria growing

Date: 31.03.2008

Bulgarian business needed an additional 5000 information technology (IT) specialists and the deficit was growing monthly, Svetlozar Petrov, manager of job ads website JobTiger, said on March 27.

The shortage forced most companies to hire candidates straight away or offer them internships. At the latest job fair targeting students in computer and telecommunications sciences, some the companies offered paid internships abroad to all candidates that showed some abilities and interest, Dnevnik daily said.

The lack of employees was significant in the trade and restaurant business at the seaside. The employers were ready to invest in their employees and to introduce incentive schemes to prevent them from leaving the company.

According to Petrov, a number of companies thought that importing employees from abroad would help them overcome the labour shortage, but failed to pay attention to the fact that only the papers of an ‘imported’ worker was worth nearly 1000 leva. Another topic was the salary levels in Bulgaria, which would hardly tempt foreign workers to come to Bulgaria, he said.
