Natura to detour Sofia’s Beverly Hills

Date: 30.04.2008

Natura 2000 will not influence construction projects unfolding in the sleek residential areas of Boyana, Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo, aka Sofia’s Beverly Hills, Toma Belev of Federation of Nature Conservation NGOs Green Balkans said.

Back on Friday last week the Minister of Ecology Chakurov issued a blueprint order, whereby he made the sites of the sleek residential areas part of the Natura 2000, the reason for this move being the fact that this is a natural habitat for 49 protected bird species.

The draft order is facing a public debate in May and just then become binding. And when this comes into effect all construction projects there will need to be given ministerial approval before launching.

With the debate on expanding Natura 2000 coming up, residents in the mentioned areas are divided in their opinions – some landowners there are raising voices against it, as they mull selling their plots at high prices, while others insist on putting some shackles to built-up sceneries mushrooming there, gnawing on the green fields and forests.
