Bulgaria state awards public procurement contracts for BGN 5 B in 2007

Date: 26.06.2008

The annual report of Bulgaria's Public Procurement Agency published Tuesday states that in 2007 the state had granted public procurement contracts worth over BGN 5 B.

This is BGN 1 B more than the value of the contracts awarded in 2006. The total number of the contracts in 2007 was 15 214, which means that the average sum granted per each contract was BGN 338 000.

The Public Procurement Agency Report points out that this sector was very important in the fight against corruption because the large amount of the awarded sums created immense corruption opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Industrial Chamber demanded in a letter to the Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Plugchieva, who is in charge of monitoring the public spending, that the control over the awarding of public procurement contracts be invested into a new unit responsible directly to the Prime Minister.

The members of the Bulgarian Industrial Chamber believe that this would help to reduce corruption because it would prevent the direct contacts between those who apply and those who award the contracts.
