One of every three Bulgarian teenagers drinks alcohol

Date: 30.06.2008

One of every three teenagers in Bulgaria, from 13 to 17 years old, is drinking alcoholic beverages, according to Sonya Toteva, Director of the National Clinic for Treatment of Alcohol Addiction.

The clinic is located in Sofia while Toteva is also the Chair of the National Association for Addictions' Treatment.

According to latest expert data, 16% of the young people in Bulgaria, who are already addicted to alcohol, are also addicted to drugs or amphetamines and have initial schizophrenic symptoms and other mental disorders.

Toteva had sent a personal request to Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov, asking him to assist in dealing with the issue of young people's addictions. The President's Secretary had informed Toteva that Parvanov had already asked the Health Minister and his team to prepare a National Program for the Treatment of Alcohol and Drug Addictions.
