11 Bulgarian, 2 foreign companies receive USD 61 M for Novo Selo military base

Date: 24.09.2008

A total of thirteen companies - eleven Bulgarian and two foreign - are going to receive USD 61,15 M for the various construction works on the Novo Selo Training Ground, which will be used as a joint military base by the Bulgarian and the US Army.

The news that the US Army has approved the two-year contracts with the construction firms was announced Thursday by the US Embassy in Sofia.

In addition to the eleven Bulgarian companies, one US, and one Italian company - Sede Secondaria Italiana - have also won projects about the Novo Selo base. The Italians, however, are also using a Bulgarian subcontractor.

The USD 61 M will be paid for the construction of 23 barrack buildings for about 2 500 troop, as well as for administrative, medical, and storage facilities.

The US Ambassador to Sofia Nancy McEldowney stated this was the largest construction project of the US Army in Bulgaria so far.

The first US soldiers permanently stationed in Bulgaria are expected to arrive in the fall of 2009. They will be using the facilities of four military bases - the Novo Selo Training Ground, the Bezmer and Graf Ignatievo Airport, and the Ayots Storage Base.

The service employees at the facilities are not hired by the US Army but by its Bulgarian subcontractors.

In May 2008 the US Army allocated USD 6,5 M for the construction of temporary facilities at the Novo Selo base, which are currently being used by 900 US and 500 Bulgarian troops during their joint military drills scheduled to end in October.
