Bulgaria's Competition Watchdog OKs merger of cable TV operators

Date: 06.10.2008

Bulgaria's Competition Protection Commission approved Thursday the merger of two of Bulgaria's largest cable TV operators - CableTel and Evrokom.

Even though the merger would give the new company a dominant position on the Bulgarian market, the Commission ruled that it would be in the best interest of the consumers because it would provide investments for modernizing and improving the electronic communications services available to them.

The Commission allowed the Dutch company FN Cable Cooperatief U.A. to acquire CableTel and V-Com Bulgaria.

FN Cable Cooperatief is also the owner FN Cable Holdings B.V., which owns 100% of Evrokom Cable Management Bulgaria.

The deal will affect three main service sectors - paid cable TV, Internet connection, and fixed telephones, which both CableTel and Evrokom offer.
