Bulgaria ranked behind Kosovo in press freedom

Date: 25.10.2008

The international NGO Reporters without Borders has ranked Bulgaria 59th in the world in its 2008 Press Freedom Index.

This places Bulgaria behind the newly independent Republic of Kosovo, which is 58th, as well as behind countries like Macedonia (42nd), Romania (49th), and Togo (55th).

In the 2007 Press Freedom Index Bulgaria was ranked 51st, but its situation had deteriorated, according to the Reporters without Borders report.

"The bad example of Bulgaria (59th), still last in Europe, serves as a reminder that universal suffrage, media pluralism and some constitutional guarantees are not enough to ensure effective press freedom. The climate must also favour the flow of information and expression of opinions", the report reads.

The first three spots in the press freedom rankings are occupied by Iceland, Luxembourg, and Norway. Belarus, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Turkmenistan, North Korea, and Eritrea occupy the last positions. The USA is ranked 41st.
