IMF denies allegations of negotiating financial assistance for Bulgaria

Date: 02.11.2008

The International Monetary Fund representation in Sofia denied Friday the allegations that the Fund and Bulgaria had been negotiating a financial support package for the country.

In Friday's statement the IMF representatives explain they had been aware of the recent publications in international media claiming that Eastern European states including Bulgaria had been holding talks with the Fund for financial assistance because of the raging global financial crisis.

The IMF states explicitly no such negotiations with Bulgaria were under way even though any one of its members had the right to request financial assistance at any time.

Ireland, Hungary, and the Ukraine have already received emergency financial support from the IMF, and Belarus and Pakistan have requested assistance from the Fund.
