Japanese garden to be build alon Novacheitsa River in Sofia

Date: 06.11.2008

As part of the current construction between Kliment Ohridski Boulevard and the neurological and psychiatric hospital Sveti Naoum in Sofia, a section of the river Novachitsa will also be undergoing modification. This comes as part of Sofia municipality's overall plan for correction of large lengths of rivers that pass through the territory of the city, Sofia city hall wrote in a press release on November 3 2008.

Novachitsa River is part of the Slatinska River valley; it has a total length of about 18km and an overall catchment area of 56.21 sq km. In many places, where the river has not been urbanised, it is hard to clean and plant matter blocks free flow of the water, possibly leading to it jumping its banks during heavy rains.

The segment in question at this time is 295m; the modification project, led by OP Sofia-Proekt, selected after a tender by the firm Rado Oltar EOOD, is to be completed in 180 calendar days. It foresees the construction of a new riverbed and a sediment collector, among others, like technology for regular monitoring and cleaning of the river.

Aesthetics are not being overlooked: included in the plan is the greening of the riverbanks with perennials. After construction is finished, a Japanese-style park will be landscaped along the river, with Japanese plants, bridges and benchesbeen envisaged to create an area of relaxation. This comes from an idea of the international organisation European Forum in partnership with Sofia municipality, Izgrev borough, International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance and other citizen initiatives.
