Rehabilitation of Sofia squares

Date: 14.11.2008

A public competition will be held for the future restoration and rehabilitation for several main Sofia squares, including Slaveikov, Battenberg, Garibaldi, St Elena, as well as some of the central streets in the capital, among them Solounska, Rakovski and Graf Ignatiev.

A motion in that sense has been passed by the urban planning committee of the Sofia municipal council, calling to allow the wide public to submit ideas and participate in the process themselves.

In contrast to the professional architectural competitions, with the public ones there is total freedom for idea presentation – whether as a text, picture or drawing - city hall architect Lyudmil Leonidov said, as quoted by Stroitelstvo Gradut weekly.

The concept was born because of Slaveikov Square and the idea that a kiosk must be installed for the sale of theatre tickets, concert tickets and tickets for other cultural events. Slaveikov Square is appropriate for public event gatherings such as concerts and other meetings due to its relative proximity to the Sofia Library, said Leonidov.

The people who will take participation in those competitions in submitting ideas, will also have the right to participate in the decision making process, insists Leonidov. There will be a public commission, with anyone interested can be present and take part in the process.

The project that qualifies on top spot will receive the right to be carried out. A design company would then be picked, by public procurement tender, to draft the technical details of the winning project, while the author of the winning idea would be retained as a consultant for the duration of the project.

The architecture and urban planning department of the city hall is now expected to draft the exact specifications of the call for projects, which would then be submitted for approval to Sofia's municipal council.
