iPhone comes to Bulgaria at sky-high price

Date: 14.11.2008

Apple’s revolutionary iPhone, selling for $199 in the US, will finally reach Bulgaria but at sky-high prices, a check by Dnevnik daily showed. The handset will be available at mobile accessories retailers Germanos and 2be for both pay-as-you-go and under-contract users.

Germanos will sell the 8GB 3G device with a Globul SIM card for 1299 leva and 1399.9 leva without contract. At 2be, it would be sold for 1319.99 leva if bought with a Globul or Vivatel contract and BGN 1499.9 without contract.

Globul said it would not comment on the pricing policy of Germanos even though the smartphone comes with Globul SIM cards. Both Globul and Germanos are owned by Greek mobile operator Cosmote, itself a unit of telecoms company OTE, in which Deutsche Telekom bought a controlling stake earlier in 2008.

Mobiltel, the largest cellphone operator on the Bulgarian market, also declined to speak about the upcoming launch. Although a partner of Vodafone, which holds the right to market the iPhone in a number of emerging markets, the operator does not sell the device.

The phone’s high price, the patchy 3G networks of local operators and the limited number of Wi-Fi zones are some of the challenges iPhone will be battling on a largely voice-only market, analysts have said.
