Bulgaria Freight Transport Expects 50% Reduction Due to Financial Crisis

Date: 17.11.2008

There is a forecast of a 50% decrease of the freight transport in Bulgaria for the last six months of the year, the sector representatives reported for the Darik radio on Friday.

The reduction in the area of bus transport is expected to reach 20% to 25%.

The reasons behind the decrease are workload reduction and the skyrocketing prices of diesel fuels in the country.

The Chair of the Union of the Road Transport Organizations Krasimir Lalov stated for Darik that the Union was preparing mass protests for next week over the fact that the oil price has been nearing USD 50 per barrel while fuels' prices in Bulgaria remain the highest in Europe.

Mirolyub Solarski, Chair of the Bulgarian Association of the Unions in Road Transport stated that the issue of protest rallies has not been discussed with him, but also declared that the transport sector in Bulgaria was going to suffer reductions and the effects of the global financial crisis in the country were forthcoming.
