Sofia University hooked up for free wireless internet access

Date: 12.12.2008

Students and professors of Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski – and anyone else who happens to be carrying a laptop computer while in the vicinity – now have free-of-charge wireless internet access. The wifi service comes on  initiative of Sofia municipality and mayor Boiko Borissov, city hall wrote in a December 8 2008 press release.

December 8 is also the traditional Students Holiday in Bulgaria – in other words, an unofficial reason to gather up a group of friends (even if you are not currently enrolled in an institution of higher education) and party.

WiMax operator Max Telecom is servicing the Sofia University wifi zone. The internet access is also valid for mobile phones that have internet capabilities.

Max Telecom was the first WiMAX operator in Europe to realise a national coverage network, starting in October 2007. At the moment, about 2.5 million residents of Bulgaria – 33 per cent of the country – are covered. The goal for 2009? Ninety per cent.
