Varna to up security over financial crisis

Date: 15.12.2008

In light of the looming financial crisis the municipality of Varna is contemplating to augment the security forces and deploy extra officers and resources, in a grand scheme unprecedented for the town, to help ease the impact from the recession, the mayor of Varna, Kiril Yordanov, said as quoted by Focus news.

He added that the economic stagnation would stimulate the manufacturers and producers of goods and other services in the town and surrounding region, to supply cheaper quality goods on the market, which would hurt the consumers. Consequently, the consumers in turn might retaliate accordingly. The authorities do not necessarily expect this to be a widespread activity, and regard the potential risk as marginal and of limited scale, but Yordanov is adamant that no such thing should occur in the first place.

However, as a result of those activities, others argue that citizens will be prone to submitting themselves to illegal activity, and in order for the cycle to be stopped in its tracks, the police will have to take preventive measures by making a preemptive strike.

Preemptive measure to deal with the crisis will be discussed on January 10 2009, where a meeting with police commissioners, representatives of the Interior Ministry and from the Varna municipality, labour union leaders and leaders from prominent branches and organizations of the seaside town will all participate.

The trade and industry chamber, the tourist chamber, construction and transport business organisations as well as members from the local entrepreneurs sector will also voice their concerns and propose measures for action. The aim is for a strategic, coherent plan and cooperation amongst all segments of the Varna society, to prevent the economic crisis gripping the city fromeffects which would be any worse than those already forecasted.
