Popular TV host gets suspended sentence for drunk driving

Date: 17.12.2008

Popular TV host Ivan Hristov (29) was sentenced to seven months suspended sentence with three years of probation by Stara Zagora court on December 16 2008 for causing a minor road accident when driving under the influence of alcohol, Bulgarian private broadcaster Darik radio said.

Hristov, one of the most popular TV personalities in Bulgaria, best known for the Sunday morning TV show Sblusuk, which is Bulgarian for "clash", which he co-hosts with Andrei Arnaoudov on private free-to-air channel bTV, will not have the right to drive a motor vehicle for 10 months, counting from the day on which the accident happened, August 4 2008, the court decided.

Hristov has already confessed to the charges filed against him by prosecutors and declined to make a deal with prosecutors in return for a speedy trial.

In the early hours of August 4 2008, Hristov crashed his vehicle into a refuse truck in the town of Stara Zgora in central Bulgaria. No one was injured and damage was minor. On November 17 2008, doctor Vasilios Panayotidis of the Stara Zagora hospital emergency ward said that Hristov had told him that he had had a litre of wine, a litre of beer and a double cognac before taking the wheel.
