Bulgaria's Agriculture with Highest Growth of Income per Worker in EU

Date: 19.12.2008

Bulgaria ranks first in the EU in its real agricultural income per worker for 2008, according to the latest EUROSTAT data released Thursday.

In 2008, Bulgaria's real agricultural income per worker registered a record growth of 24,5% thanks to the favorable weather and the rich crop, the good prices of the agricultural products, and the expanded production thanks to the farmers' subsidies.

In the EUROSTAT ranking, Bulgaria is followed by Romania with a growth of 21,4% of its real agricultural income per worker, and by Hungary with 14,6%.

Belgium (-25,6%), Estonia (-22,1%), and Latvia (-17,5%) registered the greatest decreases.

The total EU27 real agricultural income per worker went down by 4,3% in 2008, after registering a 12,2% growth in 2007. EUROSTAT points out that this decline resulted from a reduction in real agricultural income (-6.3%), together with a fall in agricultural labour input (-2.1%).
