Bulgaria's Danube Port of Svishtov Registers 30 000 Passengers in 2008

Date: 22.12.2008

29 500 passengers went through Bulgaria's International Port of Svishtov on the Danube River in 2008, the port press service announced.

Of these, 17 750 passengers traveled between Bulgaria and Romania using the permanent daily passenger ship line between Svishtov and the Romanian port of Zimnich, which was started in the middle of 2007.

The figure shows a significant increase as in all of 2006 only 5 000 passengers used the Port of Svishtov, and 17 000 did so in 2007.

70 international passenger ships with a total of 7 520 passengers stopped at the Port of Svishtov in 2008.

Between January 5 and January 31, however, the daily passenger line between Svishtov and Zimnich would not be working because of regular inspection of its ship.

In 2008 for the first time in Bulgaria, the Port of Svishtov introduced the "open doors" policy for its clients in all of its terminals.

The Port saw a significant increase of the container traffic along the Constanta-Svishtov-Sofia route through which containers with goods from the Far East reach the Bulgarian capital Sofia through the Black Sea and the Danube.

The Port of Svishtov is the southernmost port on the Danube, and has the largest customs and storage facilities in Central and North Bulgaria.
