Bus Headed to Bulgaria's Varna Hijacked by Armed Man

Date: 27.01.2009

A public transportation bus traveling on the Sofia - Varna line has been hijacked Tuesday, the Darik radio reports, citing their own sources.

The Bulgarian Interior Ministry had confirmed the incident, but refused to offer any details.

According to the report, the bus, owned by the private "Biomet" company has left the Sofia bus station at 1:00 pm with 50 passengers on board. The incident happened shortly after the bus left the capital.

The Darik radio informed that a man got on the bus in Sofia and began threatening other passengers and the driver with a handgun shortly after the bus' departure.

It is currently known that the bus is moving and the man is a 33-year- old resident of the town of Sevlievo. He is demanding to be taken immediately to see an acquainttance, someone, who last year caused a serious traffic accident during which the hijacker's pregnant wife lost her baby.
