Bulgaria registers increase in unemployment rate

Date: 23.02.2009

Bulgaria registered a slight increase in the unemployment rate in January 2009, showed the statistics provided by the National Employment Agency.

The unemployment rate has increased by 0,23 percentage points, reaching 6,5%, which compared to January 2008 is 0,88 percentage points lower. In December 2008 the unemployment rate was 6,27%.

Among the districts with lower than the average unemployment rate are the capital Sofia, Burgas, Varna, Plovdiv, and Ruse.

Currently, 240 782 people are registered as unemployed in the Labor Office Directorate, a territorial division of the National Employment Agency, which is 8 493 people more than in December 2008.

This is Bulgaria's smallest unemployment rate increase since 1994. The anti-crisis measures taken to provide jobs for a larger number of unemployed have lead to these results, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy explained.
