Bulgaria Threatens to Strip CEZ of License

Date: 23.06.2009

Czech power utility CEZ should end its three-month power bills by the end of June. Photo by BGNES Bulgaria's energy regulator has threatened that Czech power utility CEZ might be stripped of license should it fail to introduce monthly bills as of July 1.

In April the Czech utility company did not comply with last year's ruling of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission to end its three-month power bills by the end of March and was slapped a BGN 500 000 fine.

The watchdog then extended the deadline for the introduction of monthly bills until the end of June.

CEZ, which supplies power to over 2 million households and companies in western Bulgaria, including the capital Sofia, argues that the shift would mean more expenses and higher bills for the consumers.

Yet recently the company said preparations for the shift are underway.
