EU Industrial Production Registers Slight May Increase

In May 2009 compared with April 2009, seasonally adjusted industrial production1 grew by 0,5 % in the Euro Zone and by 0,1 % in the EU.

In April production fell by 1,4 % and 0,8 % respectively.

These estimates are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

However, in May 2009 compared with May 2008, industrial production declined by 17 % in the Euro Zone and by 15,9 % in the EU.

In May 2009 compared with April 2009, production of capital goods increased by 1,2 % in the Euro Zone and by 0,5 % in the EU. Non-durable consumer goods grew by 0,8 % and 0,4 % respectively.

Intermediate goods rose by 0,3 % in the Euro Zone and remained stable in the EU. Energy declined by 0,2 % in the Euro Zone, but grew by 1,2 % in the EU. Durable consumer goods fell by 2,9 % and 1 % respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in eight, fell in eleven and remained stable in Italy. The highest increases were registered in Lithuania (+7,3 %), Germany (+3,7 %), Slovenia (+2,9 %) and France (+2,6 %), and the most significant falls in Latvia (-4 %), Spain (-2,9 %), Sweden (-2,6 %) and Finland (-2,2 %).

In May 2009 compared with May 2008, production of non-durable consumer goods fell by 2,2 % in the Euro Zone and by 2 % in the EU. Energy decreased by 9,3 % and 6 % respectively. Durable consumer goods declined by 21,2 % in the Euro Zone and by 17,2 % in the EU. Capital goods dropped by 22,1 % and 21,2 % respectively. Intermediate goods fell by 23,4 % in the Euro Zone and by 22,5 % in the EU.

Industrial production fell in all Member States for which data are available. The largest decreases were registered in Estonia (-29,9 %), Finland (-23,2 %) and Luxembourg (-22,9 %), and the smallest in Ireland (-4,1 %), Poland (-5,1 %) and Greece (-7,4 %).
