Strong Summer Storms Hit Bulgaria, Rila Monastery Loses Power

Date: 29.07.2009

The area around one of Bulgaria's most popular historical sites, the Rila Monastery, is without power due to a strong thunderstorm.

The power supply company in the region, CEZ, reports that the loss of electricity was most likely due to trees falling over power lines.

The emergency teams are working to eliminate the problem, but say that due to the continuing inclement weather, they are not able to announce an exact time when the power supply would be restored.

The employee on duty at the "Civil Defense" services reported that the heavy summer storms in different parts of the country Monday morning did not result in injuries, but warned about downpours and thunderstorms in the next few days.

In the last 24-hours the Ministry of Emergency Situations and Disasters has received 23 signals for road incidents, fallen trees, flooded buildings, cars stuck in water and dangerous situations created by the possibility of falling objects from buildings' roofs.

The areas of the country that are reported to be hit the hardest by the storms are the city of Gabrovo, the Blagoevgrad region, the cities of Ruse and Kyustendil.
