Bulgaria Manufacturers to Fulfill USD 17,8 M US Weapons Contract

Date: 13.10.2009

A weapons manufacturer in Bulgaria’s Kazanlak will be given 82% of a USD 21,1 M contract to make AK-47 rifles, magazines and spare parts alongside other weapons.

US based Alliant Techsystems Inc. received the USD 21,1 M contract to supply nonstandard weapons and parts through ATK Small Caliber Systems in Independence, Kansas City Business Journal reported.

Alliant Techsystems confirmed that representatives of the Independence plant will subcontract with weapons manufacturers in Kazanlak, Bulgaria, 82 % of the contract, and also other plants in Bulgaria will fulfill 2,8 % of the contract. The contract completion date is estimated at May 25, 2010.

The company concluded that its goal is to help the Independence plant diversify so it’s not as vulnerable to swings in demand from its main contractor - the US Army.
