Date: 22.10.2009

Bulgaria’s Minister of Economy and Energy, Traicho Traikov, and his Russian counterpart Sergey Shmatko, discussed in Moscow Thursday the three large-scale joint energy projects. The Ministers have made no statements but the Russian Energy Ministry has announced that they had concluded that the joint projects – the Belene Nuclear Power Plant, the South Stream gas transit pipeline, and the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline – proceed normally, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The meeting of Traikov and Shmatko has been held in preparation of the upcoming session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation which is to take place in Sofia in December 2009.

After his meeting with Shmatko, Traikov met with the Deputy PM of the Russian Federation, Sergey Sobyanin. Traikov and Sobyanin are Chairs of the above-mentioned bilateral Commission.

The two have discussed the bilateral energy relations, the licenses for production of Russian arms held by Bulgarian firms, the boosting of the bilateral trade, and the application of a social security agreement.
