New Ambassador in London: Bulgarians No Threat to UK Labor Market

Date: 09.11.2009

The decision of the UK to extend the ban for Bulgarian workers until 2011 generates regret. This was stated by Lyubomir Kyuchukov, Bulgaria’s new Ambassador to London, as cited by BNR.

Kyuchukov hopes that the decision to extend the ban on Bulgarian workers in the UK will be reconsidered before 2011 because the Bulgarians do not threaten to steal British jobs, and by that time the UK will have overcome the recession.

“The peculiar thing about the UK and Ireland is that they have no work restrictions for the ten new EU member states which joined in 2004 but they do for Bulgaria and Romania. There are other EU countries which treated as new members equally,” Kyuchukov declared.

According to the new Bulgarian Ambassador, the UK and Bulgaria must find new niches for economic cooperation since the global financial crisis wiped out the interest of the UK buyers for Bulgarian real estate and tourism.

Kyuchukov presented his letters credentials to Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. His appointment has been a matter of controversy in Bulgaria as it was one of several lame-duck diplomatic appointments made in the last minute by the former governmnet.
