Belene NPP May Involve EU Partners

Date: 31.01.2010

Bulgaria Energy, Economy and Tourism Minister, Traicho Traikov, has stated that high quality energy companies from all over Europe, not just Germany, may show interest in the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project.

Traikov announced Tuesday that Bulgaria's new GERB government will launch a procedure in 2010 for new private investors for a majority stake in the planned Belene nuclear power plant.

Regarding the interest from German companies in Belene, Traikov added that it is not only German companies but also top quality energy companies from other EU countries that may join the Belene NPP project. He added that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has no way to make a concrete commitment to Bulgaria.

Traikov continued that the Bulgarian government has not ruled out taking up Russia on their offer of a loan for the Belene NPP construction.

Meanwhile, he concluded that both the Nabucco and South Stream gas pipeline projects could involve Bulgaria but added that they should both be ratified by the Bulgarian Parliament.
