Bulgaria Court Slaps Hefty Fee on Ex Tsar in Restitution Case

Date: 27.03.2010

Bulgaria's former Tsar, and former Prime Minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, and his sister Maria Luisa must pay a BGN 10 650 court fee in order for the magistrates to move their claim forward.

Simeon Saxe-Coburg and his sister seek to regain ownership on the former Krichim royal residence.

The rule was issued by the Plovdiv District Court with the motive that since 2007 when the trial began, the fee had gone up over the increase of the price of the lands appraised currently at BGN 1.2 M. The fee must be paid within a 7-day period starting Tuesday, otherwise the case would be dismissed. The money is to be refunded if the ex royal family wins the case.

Saxe-Coburg lawyers declared they would submit the requested amount because they want the case to come to conclusion as quickly as possible, adding they expected a final rule Tuesday, but will have to wait for one more week.
