Bulgaria's Topalov Beats Anand, Equalizes World Chess Title Score

Date: 04.05.2010

Bulgarian chess master Veselin Topalov has beaten world champion Viswanathan Anand in the eight game of the Sofia World Chess Title Match.

Playing with the white pieces, Topalov managed to force his opponent to surrender on the 56th move in in an opposite-coloured bishop ending.

Thus, with his critically important victory on Tuesday, the Bulgarian chess master has brought the score to 4:4 points, with four more games to go.

The ninth game of the Sofia World Chess Title Match is scheduled for Thursday, May 6, which in Bulgaria is celebrated as St. George’s Day, and the Day of the Bulgarian Army.

Anand and Topalov will play a total of 12 games, and if there is still no winner, there will be four more games in a rapid tiebreak.
