Bulgaria's Interior Minister Gets Ahead of PM in Popularity

Date: 03.05.2010

Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has become more popular than Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, according a recent poll.

Tsvetanov is said to have a public rating of 60%, while Borisov keeps his popularity stable at 56%, the public opinion poll of the MBMD agency shows.

The poll was conducted between April 23 and April 26, and included 1212 respondents.

“Apparently, the Bulgarian society has been waiting for a long time to see in power a party which is working to fight organized crime,” said Miroslava Radeva, Director of MBMD.

In her words, Tsvetanov’s image capitalizes on the successes of the government in cracking down on corruption and the mafia – including the many special police operations recently, and the charges raised against suspected mafia bosses and corrupt officials.

She believes that Tsvetanov’s public approval is largely due to the fact that he focuses on a field where the government can win battles, while Prime Minister Borisov is in charge of the entire Cabinet, inlcuding the many unpopular reforms.

The poll shows further that the public approval of President Georgi Parvanov is 40 %, of Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva – 28 %; of Cultura Minister Vezhdi Rashidov, Diaspora Minister Bozhidar Dimitrov, and Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov – 38 % each.

As far as the political parties are concerned, Bulgaria’s ruling party GERB enjoys the support of 36 % of the Bulgarians, the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party – 11 %; the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms – 5.5 %; the nationalist Ataka party – 2.8 %; the rightist Blue Coalition – 2.7 %, and the conservative party RZS – 1.3 %. 26 % of the respondents have stated they would not vote in general elections.
