Bulgaria to Welcome Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Germany

Date: 23.06.2010

The foreign ministers of Brazil, Celso Amorim, and Germany, Guido Westerwell, will make their first visits to Bulgaria over the week.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister Celso Amorim is arriving to Sofia Tuesday night. He will be meeting with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov Wednesday morning.

The major topics on their agenda will be the reform of the UN structure, the Iranian nuclear program, and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Brazil together with Turkey recently signed a nuclear deal with Iran, which is seen by some as a breakthrough in the Iranian nuclear program talks, and by others as a controversial step allowing Iran to defy the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

On Thursday, June 24, 2010, Germany’s Foreign Minister Guido Westerwell will make his first Bulgarian visit.

He will be in Sofia as part of his Eastern European tour, and will be talking with his Bulgarian counterpart shortly after his arrival.

The major themes of their talks will focus on the new economic governance of the EU proposed by Germany and France, the European integration of the Western Balkans, and Bulgaria’s progress towards meeting the Shenghen Area agreements.

On June 25, Germany’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Chancellor Westerwelle will also be received by Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
