Bulgaria's Unemployment Hits 10.27 % in February

Date: 08.03.2010

Bulgaria’s unemployment rate has gone over the 10%-threshold in February 2010, Labor Minister Totyu Mladenov announced Friday.

Mladenov said in Parliament that some 20 000 new unemployed were registered in February 2010. Thus, Bulgaria’s jobless people reached 380 000, or 10.27 %.

The Labor Minister predicted that this figure would climb to 10,65% in March 2010; in January, the unemployment was still at 9,9%.

In his words, in addition to those who are laid off, people who completed their re-training course, and Bulgarian immigrants returning from abroad all register as unemployed.

The Labor Ministry expects to see the unemployment rate climb up to 11,4% at the end of 2010, which means that there will 477 000 unemployed in the country.

“Even if we start overcoming the crisis in the coming months, the unemployment level will continue to climb,” Mladenov stated.
