Bulgaria Rightists Present Soviet Proof against Belene NPP

Date: 04.03.2010

The Soviet issued directions for the construction of Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) point out that terrains such as the Belene one are unsuitable for such projects.

The research conducted by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1990, based on Soviet expert opinion, was presented Friday by the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) party, which is part of the rightist Blue Coalition, along with a proposal to halt the project to build a second Bulgarian NPP in the Danube town of Belene. The proposal is signed by 10 Members of the Parliament.

“What happened in the last 20 years that made the seismic conditions at Belene better and in compliance with the Soviet criteria, and why in 1990 the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) was against the project and now is vouching for it?” UDF is asking, adding the Socialists’ position is dishonest.

The rightists appeal to BSP leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, to offer explanations.
