Bulgaria Leaders, Society Formally Commemorate Liberation Day

The traditional solemn commemoration for Bulgaria’s Liberation Day, March 3, took place before the Monument of the Unknown Warrior in Sofia.

President Georgi Parvanov, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, and Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva laid wreaths at the Monument of the Unknown Warrior before the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and witnessed the ceremonial raising of the Bulgarian flag together with a couple of thousand citizens.

Bulgaria’s leaders participated in the flag raising ceremony. European Parliament President, Jerzy Buzek, is on his first formal visit to Sofia, congratulating the Bulgarians with the 132th year since the liberation of the nation from the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

People were allowed to the Alexander Nevsky square only after inspection at police checkpoints. They strict security measures were instituted largely because of the visit of EP President Buzek.
