India Requests Bulgaria World Chess Delay over Volcanic Cloud

Date: 19.04.2010

India have officially requested for the World Chess Championship final match in Sofia between Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov to be delayed by 3 days.

India’s defending champion Anand has still not arrived in Sofia after his flight was canceled due to the volcanic ash cloud hovering over Bulgaria, the President of the Bulgarian Chess Federation Stefan Sergiev confirmed Sunday.

Anand is in Frankfurt and can not reach Bulgaria in time to prepare for Friday’s match as he does not want to take the 28 hour trip by car.

According to Sergiev the Bulgarian side was only informed about the situation Sunday by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He added that they had assumed that Anand was already in Sofia using the Hilton Hotel rooms that had been booked for him but it now appears that only Anand’s German representative is in the Bulgarian capital.
