European Experts Predict Lengthy Volcanic Ash Chaos

Date: 17.04.2010

Reports from Meteorological Offices across Europe show that the Volcanic Ash cloud could hang over Europe for at least another 4 days

Some geological experts have even said that the eruptions could cause other larger volcanoes in the area to explode which could lead to months or years of transport and climate chaos.

Iceland's Meterological Office said tremors from the volcano had grown more intense and had increased from a day ago, but that the column of steam and ash rising from the volcano had eased back to 4-5 km from as high as 11 km when it started erupting earlier this week.

Millions of stranded travelers face further air chaos as the volcanic ash from Iceland that has closed most of Europe's airspace continues to spread.

About 20 countries closed their airspace and some have extended flight bans into Monday. Experts say the cloud may not shift until later in the week.

Disruption is now said to be greater than that after 9/11 and the eruption shows no sign of abating.

Some airlines are making test flights to try to identify safe flight paths.

Dutch airline KLM said it flew a Boeing 737-800 up to the usual maximum altitude of 13 km (8 miles) on Saturday and Germany's Lufthansa said it flew 10 planes to Frankfurt from Munich at altitudes of up to 8 km.
