Danube Level Declines Drastically in Bulgarian Section

Date: 26.07.2010

The level of the Danube River near Bulgaria's Ruse has declined by 5 meters in 20 days.

After at the beginning of July, the Danube reached the critical 800 cm, and threatened to flood the city, it is now down to 294 cm, according to the Bulgarian Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River.

The cause of the sharp decline is the lack of precipitation in the upper part of the river basin.

The Danube is expected to decline by 10 more cm in the next two days, and the experts are advising the shippers to be very cautious because the low level of the water might lead to the appearance of shoots and rapids.
