Bulgaria Capital Sofia Beefs Up Security for New Year's Eve

A total of 200 policemen will be deployed in downtown Sofia during the pinnacle of the festive celebrations for the New Year 2011.

The spectators at the special concert at Knyaz Alexander I Square will see toughened security checks at checkpoints, police informed.

The concert, the speeches of the Bulgarian president and foreign officials and the first minutes of 2011 will be broadcast live on the state-owned national TV channel BNT, as well as on video online.

Apart from the city center, some 100 policemen will be deployed to patrol the streets of the city to watch out for the public order near bars and restaurants.

In the country 200 firefighters will conduct surprise inspections of fire safety precautions at hotels and restaurants.
