Iran Bans Valentine's Day – Report

Date: 04.01.2011

Iran has banned any cards, gifts, teddy bears or other symbols of Valentine's Day, according to the Iranian semiofficial ILNA news agency.

Even though celebrating Valentine's Day on February 14 has become popular in the recent years in Iran and other Middle East countries, an Iranian state directive has decided to forbid the tradition, which is named after an early Christian martyr.

The ban is the part of the attempts of the Islamic Republic to fight the spread of Western culture.

Other Muslim countries, such as Saudi Arabia, have also sought to forbid Valentine's Day tokens. However, it is celebrated widely in nearby places like Dubai.
