Bulgaria Vows to Inspect All Its Buses after Deadly Crash

Date: 19.06.2011

A technical inspection of all buses will be carried out starting Monday, the country's Transport Minister, Ivaylo Moskovski, announced.

A lot of buses will be suspended after the thorough inspection, the Minister told the Bulgarian National Radio, pointing out the last similar campaign was carried out in 2003.

The bus companies will be stimulated to renew their motor fleets, he said.

The measure comes after 8 people perished in a hellish crash early on Wednesday. A bus, travelling from the capital Sofia to the Black Sea city of Burgas overturned on Trakiya highway, near the second largest city of Plovdiv, killing 8 and injuring 18.

On Thursday, Moskovski assured that in the upcoming days he will propose a debate between experts and bus companies to introduce restrictions on the age of buses which service busy lines, adding such proposal had been submitted to the Parliament months ago, but it had not been passed yet.
