Canada Gives Bulgaria 21 000 Artifacts Back

Date: 12.06.2011

Yesterday Canada officially restored to Bulgaria 21 000 antiques. The objects were detained by Canadian authorities while being prepared for export.

“The artifacts date back to all epochs of Bulgarian history and in fact represent the history of Bulgarians from Antiquity to the Middle Ages” - said Bulgaria’s Deputy Culture Minister, Todor Chobanov.

Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture, Vejdi Rashidov received the artifacts at a special ceremony in the Museum of Civilizations in Ottawa. The Canadian court, ascertained illegal export of the antiques from Bulgaria, decided that their ownership was to be passed to Bulgarian authorities.

UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova attended the ceremony. Minister Rashidov awarded the Canadian Cultural Heritage Department with the highest insignia of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture - Golden Century.

The Bulgarian delegation will also visit Toronto. Rashidov will meet the Bulgarian community there and will attend the celebrations on the end of the school year of the Bulgarian Sunday School in Brampton.
