Western Tourists Make Holiday in Bulgaria for EUR 20 per Day

Date: 15.06.2011

Despite the weak start of the season, the heavy-drinking English and German tourists are in attendance

The expectations of the Bulgarian hotel-keepers at the seaside for a record influx of western tourists this summer have not been fulfilled, yet.

"We registered a boom of early bookings from Western Europe in February and March 2010," a manager of a luxurious SPA hotel in the Golden Sands resort told the Standart.

"However, then we were offering 30 % off on our all-inclusive packages. Thus, the tourists who took advantage of our deals are now making their holiday in Bulgaria for less then 20 euros a day, including food, accommodation, spa, swimming pool etc.

"However, these early booking deals were valid only for May and June, but we cannot endure a longer promotional period - 20 euro per day cannot cover our costs throughout the season," he went on.

It was because of these early bookings that hotelkeepers said they expected a very strong summer season. Now, it seems, however, that the effects of the crisis have not passed yet, as the bookings made by the Bulgarian citizens have fallen by half.
