The West didn’t want us being good

Date: 18.06.2011

MEP and archon of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Slavi Binev gave an interview for the biggest European politics magazine Presidency Key Brief. It has been the first time that a Bulgarian name appeared on its pages, which usually feature the opinions of presidents and prime ministers. In the interview Binev tells of certain peculiar aspects of Bulgarian development for the last twenty years, or the so-called transition period, and of the problems the Bulgarians have encountered when faced with the new ways.

“In the West we were called The new children of the Eastern Bloc, but we have never been defined as the good citizens of Europe. The most frequent question has been: “Why all of a sudden you want to be come good? You were so nice as the bad? As if they insisted on the necessary evil being played by us so that they could have only the position of the good preserved for them and thus they could be the society?s defenders from the bad ones,” comments Binev.
