The Labor Markets of Ten EU Member States Still Closed for Bulgarians

Date: 01.05.2011

Ten EU member states have decided to wait until 2013, when the so-called “transition period” will end, before fully opening their labor markets for Bulgarian nationals. This became clear from a statement of Austrian Minister of Social Affairs, Labour and Consumer Protection, Mr. Rudolf Hundstorfer.

“In the accession treaty that Bulgaria and Romania signed upon joining the Bloc in 2007 it is provided that all restrictions on the free movement of workers from the two countries should be lifted in 2012, but some of the old EU members, including Austria and Germany, have decided to keep their labor markets closed for Bulgarians and Romanians for another two years,” Mr. Hundstorfer explained.

Germany and Austria were also the last of the old EU members to open their labor markets for nationals of the ten countries that joined the bloc in 2004.
