Bulgarian Rural Areas Need Investors’ attention

Date: 11.08.2011

About 100 000 ha of arable land in the region of Haskovo, southeastern Bulgaria, are waiting for the promised Israeli investments in the field of agriculture.

According to information of the local Directorate for Agriculture, there are 1 261 677.5 ha of fields in the district of Haskovo, which means 0.1 ha uncultivated land per each 1.1 ha of arable one in the region.

"If the good intention of the Israeli and the Bulgarian governments come true, this will give some fresh air to our region, which relies heavily on agriculture,” Russi Kolev, mayor of the village of Elena in the region of Haskovo, said. The price of arable land in Haskovo is 1 200 or 1 300 per one hectare. The owners of land in the region of Haskovo are desperately seeking to sell it, but there are almost no buyers.
